It’s no secret that amalgam restorations induce cracks in teeth from their vastly different coefficient of thermal expansion.  It is still a priority to retain a maximum volume of tooth structure (a.k.a. crowning a tooth does not strengthen an anterior tooth as it depends on flexural resistance which comes from pericervical enamel and dentin) and utilize a bonded approach which does offer some flexural strength recovery depending on the material used.
