My rule with partial replacement restorations is that these are only acceptable if: i) you have placed the restoration yourself previously, and ii) it passes the air particle abrasion test. If the margins light up during abrasion, the powder has thus infiltrated the junction between restorative and tooth and the old restoration should be removed.
As always, prior to your 2% chlorhexidine soak, treat the old composite with a silane coupling agent to attempt chemical linkage between the silica of the old composite and the methacryl group of your new bonding resin.
A single shade of Kerr Simplishade Medium was utilized here for this occlusal partial replacement restoration, leaving the marginal ridge intact. Fissures were characterized using Voco Final Touch Brown tint.
