Indirect overlays are a nice idea by some, however, if marginal integrity and precision of fit is suboptimal, early problems can arise. There is a quote from John Kois that comes to mind, “sometimes more is more.” He is referring to the mode of failure of a tooth. In this case, there is one “virgin” proximal enamel wall left, however, if the patient has been susceptible to interdental caries and there is an enamel lesion in this wall, sometimes, it is better to eliminate the potential mode of failure at the expense of going slightly more aggressive in the preparation design so that the nerve does not need to be “irritated twice” when the indirect restoration needs to be removed and redesigned.
